In the first five days of the Christmas Road Safety Campaing (phase 2) police have detected over 19,000 speeding motorists (speed camera detections and mobile radars), 190 drink drivers and 127 drivers testing positive at roadside drug driving tests.
Sadly four people have lost their lives since Phase 2 of the road safety campaign commenced on December 23 and a further 107 people have been injured in 91 injury traffic incidents, some critically.
Day five (December 27) saw 13 injury traffic incidents and two fatal traffic incidents – a 7-year-old boy died in a crash involving two trucks at Pampas and a 48-year-old male pushbike rider died after apparently falling from his bicycle at Bushland Beach.
Day five also saw two people driving when more than four times the legal alcohol limit (0.218% at Glenwood and 0.215% at Gympie) and three incidents of drivers speeding at more than 40kms over the legal 100km
