Jeremiah O’Toole Park Playground Opens to Morningside Community

Families gathered at Jeremiah O’Toole Park in Morningside to celebrate the opening of its upgraded playground, marking the completion of a play space shaped by community feedback and delayed during construction by rain.

The community opening brought families together at the park, with face painting and ice creams among the activities provided for the occasion.

BCC workers and others involved in delivering the project were acknowledged during the opening, which followed more than a year of planning, design work and construction associated with the playground upgrade.

Community Feedback Shapes Jeremiah O’Toole Park

The playground that families gathered to celebrate had its beginnings in community consultation.

Plans announced in April 2025 outlined a redesigned playground at Jeremiah O’Toole Park as part of a wider package of proposed improvements. At that stage, final designs for the playground were still being developed.

By November 2025, consultation had identified a preference among residents for themed play equipment. A farm-themed concept was subsequently developed for the playground.

The announced design included swings, shade, sensory play panels, a horse springer and a custom barn tower, with equipment intended to cater for children of different ages.

The opening therefore followed a process in which local feedback had helped determine the direction of the new play area before construction.

Opening Follows Rain Delays

The playground did not reach opening without delays.

Recent rain affected construction, pushing the expected completion of the project back. A July opening was later identified as the revised target while work continued.

The eventual community celebration marked the point at which the upgraded playground was ready to open after those delays.

One response posted following the event praised the combination of play equipment and surrounding park facilities, including the basketball/pickleball court, seating and shelters.

Broader Improvements Planned for Morningside Park

The playground was originally announced alongside a broader set of improvements for Jeremiah O’Toole Park.

Plans released in 2025 included new pathways intended to improve movement around the park for children using scooters and bicycles, people with prams and people using mobility devices.

Additional seating around the playground and basketball area was also proposed, together with another shaded shelter beside the playground. Refurbishment of the basketball shooters’ box formed part of the plans as well.

Those earlier proposals provided the wider setting for the playground project, while the play area itself continued to develop through consultation and later construction.

The opening celebration brought that part of the project into use, with Morningside families gathering at the park after the weather-related construction delays.
