A Saturday evening drive turned traumatic for two young people when their small car collided with a truck at one of Morningside’s busiest intersections.
The collision occurred around 8.10pm at the corner of Bennetts Road and Wynnum Road, involving a Ford F350 truck and a Holden Barina carrying two 18-year-olds.
The young woman behind the wheel of the Barina suffered significant injuries in the impact and was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition. Her male passenger was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure following the incident.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of the collision. The intersection, familiar to many locals as a key junction connecting residential areas with the main Wynnum Road corridor, was temporarily affected whilst crews worked to clear the scene and investigate.
A man in his thirties, believed to have been driving the truck at the time of the collision, is currently assisting police with their enquiries into what led to the crash.
The incident has prompted police to reach out to the community for assistance. Detectives are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area around the time it occurred.
The intersection where the crash took place sits at the heart of the local community, with the historic corner marking an important crossroads for residents travelling between neighbourhoods or heading towards nearby shopping and business districts.
Road safety authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances that led to the collision, working to piece together the sequence of events that resulted in such serious consequences for the young occupants of the smaller vehicle.
Community members with any information about the incident, or who may have relevant CCTV or dashcam footage, are encouraged to contact Policelink to assist with the ongoing investigation.
