The Queensland Police Service is encouraging retailers to be aware of the risks of a fraud occurring in stores using the retailer’s own EFTPOS facilities.
‘Card not present’ fraud occurs when stolen credit card details are used for a transaction where the credit card is not physically present and stolen credit card details are manually entered.
“In recent months we’ve seen offenders manually enter stolen credit card details into EFTPOS terminals in stores across South East Queensland. This means they can make fraudulent transactions without a card physically present and without a PIN,” Detective Superintendent Terry Lawrence said.
“This type of fraud is particularly concerning for businesses. The costs are incurred by the retailer as it is their EFTPOS facility used to commit the fraud.
