Four people have been charged with more than 140 offences for allegedly altering the Vehicle Identification Numbers on stolen and written-off cars before selling them to unsuspecting consumers.
The arrests were the culmination of Operation Sierra Tusk conducted by Upper Mount Gravatt Criminal Investigation Branch, targeting the fraudulent sale of vehicles across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.
Two men from Southport aged 22 and 20, a 23-year-old Logan man and a 19-year-old Logan woman have each been charged with 147 offences including fraud, forgery, uttering, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
It will be alleged the men and woman purchased a number of statutory write-off vehicles, altering the VINs before on-selling them privately using forged documents declaring the cars undamaged.
The group also allegedly stole vehicles from the side of the road and used the same process to sell them to members of the public.
