Australia has reclaimed the Commonwealth Games women’s artistic gymnastics team title, with Premier Gymnastics athlete Ruby Pass helping secure gold before qualifying for the uneven bars final in Glasgow.
Pass competed alongside Georgia Godwin, Kate McDonald, Breanna Scott and Emily Whitehead as Australia finished ahead of Canada and England at Glasgow Arena.
The result delivered Australia its first women’s artistic gymnastics team title at the Commonwealth Games since 2010. For Pass, it also marked another step in a career that began at the age of six in New South Wales and has since taken her to the Olympic Games.
From New South Wales to International Gymnastics
Born in Figtree, Pass began gymnastics at six before moving to a Sydney club when she was 10. Her training involved a three-hour return journey six times a week, an early commitment that preceded a strong junior career.
Pass won the junior Australian all-around and uneven bars titles in 2021, along with silver medals on balance beam and floor.
She added national junior titles in the all-around, vault, balance beam and floor in 2022, before winning all five events at the Australian Classic later that year.
Gymnastics Australia named her the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Junior International Gymnast of the Year for 2022.
National Titles Lead to Paris Selection
Pass moved into senior competition in 2023, competing at World Cup events in Doha and Baku before winning the all-around, vault and floor titles at the Oceania Championships.
She also won the uneven bars title at the Australian Championships and made her World Championships debut in Antwerp.
Her results continued in 2024, when she helped Australia finish second at the Senior DTB Pokal Team Challenge.
At the Australian Championships that May, Pass won gold in the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor before being selected for the Paris Olympic Games.
She represented Australia alongside McDonald, Emma Nedov, Scott and Whitehead. The team finished 10th, while Pass placed 13th in the individual all-around.
Morningside-Trained Ruby Pass Reaches Bars Final
Pass now trains at Premier Gymnastics in Morningside under coaches Misha Barabach and Tao Xiaomin.
Her Commonwealth Games campaign followed a year affected by illness and injury, but the 19-year-old returned to international competition as part of Australia’s five-member Glasgow team.
Australia built its lead through the uneven bars and balance beam rotations, reaching the halfway point 1.2 points ahead of England.
Godwin recorded Australia’s highest floor score before the team entered the final vault rotation with a 2.5-point advantage over Canada. The Australians completed the event in first place, ahead of Canada and England.
Pass’s Glasgow campaign will continue beyond the team result.
She qualified sixth for the uneven bars final after scoring 13.400 during qualification. She also finished 12th in vault qualification, narrowly missing a place in that apparatus final.
The uneven bars final is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The team gold also lifted Godwin’s Commonwealth Games medal tally to nine, making her Australia’s most decorated female gymnast at the event.
For Pass, the Glasgow result added Commonwealth Games gold to a senior record that already includes Australian titles, World Championships appearances and Olympic competition, with another medal opportunity remaining on uneven bars.
