Police are investigating two traffic crashes which occurred about 2km south of Proserpine this morning.
Preliminary inquiries indicate at 6.05am police attended a collision on the Bruce Highway. Two 4WD’s travelling in opposite directions have collided and both drivers were taken to Proserpine Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Whilst attending to the crash police were notified of a second crash 200m further south on the Bruce Highway.
Initial inquiries indicate vehicles were stopped in a line of traffic because of the first crash when a Holden Rodeo has collided with the last stopped vehicle, a Mercedes van. The van has then collided with a Ford Ranger which was also stopped in the line of traffic.
The driver of the Holden Rodeo, an 80-year-old Proserpine man, has been airlifted to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the second crash received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Suspicious fire appeal, Pacific Pines
Detectives investigating a suspicious fire at a Pacific Pines sporting club last month have released images and CCTV of two people they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries.
Around 8.32pm on Friday June 29, two unidentified males approached the McAuley Parade building and poured a liquid on the ground.
One of them then ignited it with a lighter and set fire to the building.
The fire was extinguished but the property sustained moderate damage.
Investigations indicate the pair may have superficial burns to their face and hands and any exposed hair would have been singed or burnt.
It is also believed one of the males was using a mobile phone to film the incident.
Anyone who may recognise those depicted in the images or footage is urged to contact police.
