Police officer stood down, Legal Division

A senior constable from Legal Division has been stood down from duty with the Queensland Police Service.
The officer is the subject of allegations of assault, inappropriately accessing confidential information and failure to adequately supervise a child in the officer’s care.
In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when an officer faces serious allegations of misconduct.  This does not mean the allegations against the officer have been substantiated.

Reward announcement and appeal for information into the suspected murder of Gregory James Thurlow

Homicide detectives are hopeful the announcement of a significant reward for information into the 1996 disappearance and suspected murder of Gregory James Thurlow, alongside the launch of a billboard and targeted digital campaign in the area he was last seen, will generate new leads.
At the time of his disappearance, 27-year-old Greg had left his mother’s Manly West home on October 1, 1996, advising family members he was travelling to the Redcliffe area.
During the evening he attended a house on Longland Street, Scarborough, before travelling to a friend’s house at Mitze Street, Bray Park. He was last seen alive somewhere between late the same day and into the early hours of October 2, 1996, leaving the Bray Park house with a male associate.
Police believe the men travelled in a green 1980 VC Holden Commodore sedan, believed to be owned by Greg’s associate. This vehicle is believed to have stopped along Anzac

‘Money mules’ warned as police target technology support scams

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial and Cyber Crime Group have charged two men for their role in a cold call technology support money laundering network.
On Tuesday, detectives attended a residence in Albion and arrested a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old man. Both men have been charged with recklessly engaging in money laundering, bailed to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 28.
Police will allege the men, both students, were involved with a network of offenders obtaining millions of dollars through technology scams, receiving dishonestly obtained funds deposited into accounts they had opened, and received a commission for sending this money offshore.
These arrests relate to Operation Romeo Taper, which commenced in May 2019, when information was received regarding a man who had been identified as being a money mule for cold call technology support scams.

Fraud arrest – Gold Coast

Detectives have charged a 51-year-old man in relation to major fraud offences following a three-month investigation on the Gold Coast.
Around 7am this morning detectives executed a search warrant on a house at Hope Island where numerous computers, printers and telecommunications equipment were seized.
It will be alleged by police that the man was running a fraudulent finance brokerage company under the name Citi Private Capitol.
A 51-year-old Hope Island man has been charged with one count each of carrying on the business of committing fraud and disobeying a lawful order.
He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Police investigations are ongoing and detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has had any dealings with that company.

Sydney couple fined for border breach in truck

A Sydney couple, travelling in a truck, have been fined more than $9,000 after allegedly sneaking across the Queensland border before being intercepted by police.
An officer from the Road Policing Task Force intercepted the heavy vehicle on the Bruce Highway at Murrumba Downs around 1.30pm on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old male truck driver crossed the Queensland border at Coolangatta using a freight category border declaration pass, however, police allege a 21-year-old woman was also travelling in the vehicle without a declaration pass.
The 21-year-old Saint Clair woman and the Jordan Springs man were each issued with a $4,003 Penalty Infringement Notice (PIN) for failing to comply with Queensland’s COVID-19 Border Direction.
A string of heavy vehicle traffic infringements totalling $1,305 were also issued to the driver including for the vehicle being over length and for failing to record information in a work diary.

What is the most interesting part of your job?
The dynamic nature of the field of forensic science means that technology is always changing.
I enjoy keeping myself across a range of emerging DNA technologies so that I can provide accurate advice to both the forensic and investigative personnel, doing my part to assist them in solving crimes through DNA identifications.
It is my passionate interest in this field that has kept me motivated since I joined the DNA Management Section 18 years ago.

Possession and distribution of child exploitation material – Kangaroo Point

Detectives from South Brisbane District executed a search warrant at the Australian Border Force Kangaroo Point Alternate Place of Detention Facility today.
Detectives seized electronic devices in the possession of a male detainee at the facility.
Police subsequently issued the detainee with a Notice to Appear for offences of possess child exploitation material and distribute child exploitation material (one count each).
The man is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 18.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be provided.
The Queensland Police Service acknowledges the cooperation of Australian Border Force members in this investigation.

A police officer from the Ethical Standards Command has today been stood down from official duty with the Queensland Police Service and will be tasked to perform non-operational duties.
The officer is subject to an ongoing investigation into allegations of unauthorised access of confidential information.
In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when an officer faces serious allegations of misconduct.
This does not mean the allegations against the officer have been substantiated.

Operation Impede Arrests

Police from Tara and Chinchilla have charged 11 people with 37 offences following the recently launched Operation Impede, focusing on drug and property crime within the local area.
Police executed four search warrants over the past two days, one resulting in the most significant drug seizure in Tara for the last few years.
It will be alleged more than 50 cannabis plants, more than one kilogram of dry cannabis, 345 cannabis seeds, eight LSD paper tabs and various drug paraphernalia were located during the search of a Kookaburra Drive address.
A 44-year-old Tara man has been charged with two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and one count each of producing dangerous drugs, possess utensils, permit place and possess suspected tainted property.
He is expected to appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on October 13.

What is the most interesting part of your job?
Finding fingerprints on objects using advanced chemical techniques is always interesting.
The development of a fingerprint from a surface that has been exposed to the elements such as rain can be very challenging, however using advanced techniques we have been able to develop important fingerprint impressions, even when you would have thought that all the forensic evidence would have been washed away.
