The YMCA Cannon Hill Community Centre is giving locals the chance to bring their sewing projects to life, without spending a cent. A new sewing space at the Lang Street facility is now available to the public, offering free access to six sewing machines and two overlockers for anyone looking to stitch, hem or create.
A Place For Creativity And Connection
The sewing room is designed for locals who have ideas but not the tools to make them happen. Whether it’s mending clothes, crafting gifts or exploring textile art, the space offers room to create at your own pace.

It’s not a class, but a shared environment where people can work independently. The machines are maintained by the YMCA and made available at no cost. The sewing sessions are held every Monday and Thursday, with two time slots available: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

More Than Sewing: A Community Hub
While the sewing space is new, the YMCA Cannon Hill Community Centre has long supported the community with programs that promote wellbeing and connection. Services include mental health counselling on Fridays through a partnership with Change Futures, emergency relief for those doing it tough, and a regular Justice of the Peace service each Monday.

One of the most practical community supports is Wellbeing Wednesday, which includes free food and clothing, toiletries, and access to laundry services via OrangeSky. This service runs weekly and is aimed at helping people doing it tough to feel cared for without judgement.
Supporting Health, Movement And Culture
Fitness and recreational programs also feature throughout the week. The Aussie Taiso program, which offers Japanese-inspired stretching and movement exercises, is held on Monday mornings during school terms. Seniors can join in regular arts and crafts, luncheons and social outings through the centre’s over-50s program.

The centre is also home to the River City Gymnastics and Dance Academy, which uses the space multiple days a week for children’s classes. Sessions include early morning and after-school activities, with ongoing enrolments open through the academy’s contact number.

Accessible Spaces And A Focus On Sustainability
Outside of scheduled programs, locals can hire spaces like the large hall or Garden Gazebo for events, classes or group activities. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 07 3517 2424 or emailing cannonhillcc@ymcaqueensland.org.au.
A solar system installed in 2022 helps cut power costs, with savings reinvested into services like the sewing space and emergency support.
The centre operates weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with weekend events scheduled by arrangement. For updates on events, programs and services, locals can also check out the centre’s official Facebook page.
