Fatal traffic crash, Underwood

A 61-year-old motorcyclist has died following a two-vehicle traffic crash at Underwood this evening.
Initial information indicates around 6pm a motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Kingston Road and Ferguson Street.
The male motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
A 42-year-old man and an eight-year-old girl who were passengers in the car sustained minor injuries.
The 41-year-old female driver and a 12-year-old female passenger were not injured.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Public Appeal: Assault, Gold Coast District

Police are appealing to the public for assistance to identify an elderly man, who was assaulted at a bus-stop on the Gold Coast last month.
On August 23, a video was provided to police showing an elderly man being verbally threatened by a teenager.
The elderly man attempts to walk away but is pushed to the ground by a second teenager, before the two teens kick the man repeatedly to the stomach.
Subsequent investigations indicate the assault was recorded sometime in the evening between Monday August 20 and Wednesday August 22 and may have occurred in Robina or Varsity Lakes.
Extensive patrols of the area have failed to identify the assault location.
Anyone with information as to the victim’s identity, whereabouts or welfare – or offence location – is urged to contact police.

Fatal traffic crash, Kumbarilla

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating at fatal single vehicle traffic crash which occurred at Kumbarilla near Tara this morning.
Preliminary investigations indicate police were notified just before 11am a sedan was travelling along Moonie Highway south west of intersection with Surat-Development Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree.
The male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A female passenger has been airlifted to hospital.
Anyone who may have seen the crash is urged to contact police.

Contaminated strawberries, Queensland – update 1

Police are making inquiries into a suspected copycat incident as part of the investigation into the contamination of strawberries in Queensland.
The suspected copycat incident, reported at a supermarket in Gatton, involves the discovery of a thin metal object in a punnet of strawberries.
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Terry Lawrence said this appeared to be a copycat incident, but police would always keep an open mind.
Police have released a photo in relation to the suspected copycat incident and continue to investigate it.
Investigators have also now confirmed a fourth contamination incident as having occurred in a punnet of strawberries.
The contaminated strawberries were identified by a customer in Gladstone.
Of the four confirmed incidents, two each are in Queensland and Victoria.
Inquiries to date indicate the contamination affects two brands of strawberries – “Berry Obsession” and “Berry Licious”.
It is understood the brands are sold in stores in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital

Fatal traffic crash, Davies Creek

Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash in which two people have died on the Kennedy Highway at Davies Creek, near Mareeba this morning.
Initial information indicates just before 7.30am a semi-trailer and a truck were involved in a collision on the highway.
As a result of the crash, the vehicles caught fire with the two drivers declared deceased at the scene.
The Kennedy Highway remains closed and is expected to be for some time.
Traffic coming from Mareeba will not be able to get through to Kuranda and motorists should delay travel or seek alternate routes until further notice.
Forensic Crash Unit investigations continue into the incident.

Road closures for the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, Southport

Gold Coast police would like to remind motorists of upcoming road closures due to the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final at Southport which are in place from today.
The event will be held over five days, from Wednesday September 12 to Sunday September 16, with more than 5000 athletes and spectators expected to attend this year’s event.
Police have been working with event organisers and stakeholders to ensure the event is conducted safely and with minimum disruption to traffic.
Motorists are advised that travelling anywhere near the Southport Broadwater Parklands during this event may results in delays due to the diversions that will be in place.
Major Events Group Senior Sergeant Des Hearn said: “Motorists are advised that they need to plan their journey and allow extra time if travelling in the affected locations.

Dangerous operation of a vehicle, Cairns

Cairns police have charged a 54-year-old woman after a vehicle was driven into a house in Whitfield overnight.
It will be alleged the woman and a 48-year-old man were involved in a verbal altercation before the woman drove a vehicle through an exterior wall and into the Atherton Street home around 8.30pm.
While no one was injured during the incident, the house sustained significant damage.
Police will allege the woman provided a Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.163 per cent.
The woman has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle and being adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.
She is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Update: Attempted armed robbery, Crestmead

Detectives from the Logan District Robbery Taskforce have charged a man following ongoing investigations into the alleged attempted robbery of a Crestmead grocery store on June 28.
It will be alleged that shortly before 8pm, a man entered the business on Julie Street armed with a small axe.
He allegedly threatened the attendant with the axe and demanded cash before the attendant then threw a number of cans of tuna at him.
The man fled the scene on foot empty-handed.
No one was physically injured as a result.
A 23-year-old Kingston man was today arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery and two counts of fraud.
He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow (September 13).

Contaminated strawberries, Queensland

The Queensland Police Service has commenced an investigation into the contamination of strawberries in Queensland.
Inquiries to date indicate the contamination affects two brands of strawberries – “Berry Obsession” and “Berry Licious”.
It is understood the brands are sold in stores in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Police are liaising with retailers to ensure that all stock is removed from sale.
The contamination relates to what appears to be sewing needles inserted in strawberries.
Police are urging anyone who locates strawberries containing the needles to contact Policelink for further advice on 131 444.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said anyone else who had bought the brands of strawberries without signs of tampering should return them to the store or throw them away.
“While it is expected that berries picked early last week would now not be useable, many people freeze the fruit for later use,” she said.
