A man has died after the motorcycle he was riding crashed at Stratford in Cairns this afternoon.
Preliminary investigations indicate at around 12.30pm a motorcycle was travelling north on the Captain Cook Highway when it hit a guardrail of the Barron River Bridge and travelled down an embankment.
Emergency services attended and a 22-year-old Gordonvale man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Fatal traffic crash, Burketown
A 30-year-old man has died following a single vehicle crash approximately 60km south of Burketown overnight.
The man was travelling in a Toyota Hilux along Wills Developmental Road after 7:30pm when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
The 20-year-old male driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Attempted murder, Admiralty Island (Cairns)
Police have charged a man with attempted murder following an assault on Admiralty Island in Cairns this morning.
It will be alleged at around 6am two men, who are known to each other, became involved in a physical dispute on a boat moored at Admiralty Island.
Police will further allege during the dispute a 64-year-old Portsmith man was assaulted, receiving a serious laceration to his neck.
The 64-year-old man made his way to shore where he was met my emergency services and transported to Cairns Hospital for surgery, where he remains in a stable condition.
Responding officers located a man in nearby boat, where he was taken into custody without incident.
A 27-year-old Portsmith man has been charged with one count of attempted murder.
He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on September 30.

Armed robbery, Inala
Police are investigating the armed robbery of a drive-thru bottle shop in Inala overnight.
At around 8:45pm, a man armed with a small axe entered the business on Freeman Road and demanded money from two staff members.
The man then stole a sum of cash before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured hatchback.
No one was physically injured during the robbery.
The man is described as approximately 175cm tall, of a medium build with brown eyes.

Minister for Police, The Honourable Mark Ryan MP, today joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll to pause and pay tribute to the 147 fallen Queensland Police Service officers in honour of National Police Remembrance Day.
With 2019 being the 30-year anniversary of National Police Remembrance Day commemorations across Australia and the South West Pacific Region, the occasion was marked with poignant marches and services across the state.
Commissioner Carroll said this year was the first time a National Police Remembrance Day Service was held at the newly dedicated Queensland Police Memorial, following a march from Queens Garden past the previous police memorial site; a watershed moment.
“The importance of us as a Service coming together to recognise the greatest sacrifice that can be made by our colleagues cannot be overlooked,” Commissioner Carroll said.

Drug operation closure, Townsville
Today marked the end of a significant drug operation across Townsville, Operation Romeo Telos.
The operation commenced in August and involved search warrants being conducted at a number of properties across Townsville and Brisbane.
Officers seized approximately 5.5kgs of methylamphetamine, 23kgs of cannabis, as well as a small quantity of cocaine and ecstasy. More than $850,000 cash was also seized.
Police have charged 16 people for 95 offences, including nine people for drug trafficking.
The operation involved officers from several commands, coordinated by Major and Organised Crime Squad – Northern.

Wounding, Robina
Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy, after a man was wounded at Robina this afternoon.
It will be alleged that around 11.15am, a 26-year-old Southport man and friend were riding electric scooters along a footpath running parallel to Robina Town Centre Drive, when they were approached at the intersection of Collyer Quays by a masked male armed with a knife.
Without speaking, the male has allegedly slashed the knife towards the pair as they rode past, resulting in the 26-year-old man sustaining a minor stab-wound to his right armpit.
The male then allegedly chased the pair for a short distance, before they managed to ride away and notify police.
Police attended the scene and patrolled the area, arresting a 17-year-old Robina boy at Huntingdale Crescent around midday.
The 26-year-old Southport man was treated by paramedics at the scene, before he was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable
Police prepare for Riverfire 2019
Police are busy preparing to ensure one of Brisbane’s biggest events, Riverfire, is safe and secure for everyone heading out to watch the fireworks spectacle.
Acting Chief Superintendent Tony Fleming, the Riverfire Commander, said around half a million people were expected to line the banks of Brisbane River for the celebration.
“We are well-versed in planning and preparing for major events, and Riverfire is no exception,” Acting Chief Superintendent Fleming said.
“We will have extra police on patrol throughout the city, South Bank, Kangaroo Point and other vantage points across Brisbane.
“I am urging everyone coming into the city tomorrow to allow extra travel time. Public transport will be your best option, remembering that major road and bridge closures will come into effect from Saturday afternoon.
“Riverfire spectators should also drink responsibly and only within designated areas.
“Everyone heading to Southbank should be aware that it will be fenced off and drinking alcohol there is not
Armed robbery, Calamvale
Police are seeking public assistance to identify a man involved in an armed robbery at a Calamvale hotel overnight.
Just before 9:25pm, a man entered the licensed premises on Compton Road and threatened a staff member with a knife.
The man stole a sum of money and fled on foot towards the vicinity of a fast food restaurant car park.
The man was described to be about 173cm tall, with a proportionate build, possible tattoo on his left lower arm, red hair, brown eyes, fair skin and had a foreign accent. He was wearing long black pants and long dark sleeve top and black gloves.
The 18-year-old male staff member was not physically injured.

Update 2 – Cold case homicide investigation
A second man has today been charged with murder following the death of Jay Brogden in Airlie Beach in 2007
As part of the investigation by members of the Homicide Investigation Unit and Whitsunday CIB detectives, the man was extradited from New South Wales yesterday over his alleged role in the murder.
The 33-year-old man was originally arrested in Coffs Harbour on March 26 by the New South Wales Police Force on unrelated matters.
He has been charged with one count of murder.
The man is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.
Investigations remain ongoing.
