An Emergency Alert message to boil water has been issued for residents in the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council area.

Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council has advised recent rain has impacted the water treatment plant and recommends that residents boil all drinking water until further notice.

Residents are advised to tell family and friends.

URGENT – ROSS RIVER DAM GATES MAY OPEN TO FULL SETTING TONIGHT

Residents in many suburbs across Townsville are warned that they may experience flooding from rapid rises of the Ross River.
This includes Rosslea, Hermit Park, Railway Estate, Townsville City, Oonoonba, Idalia, Cluden, West End, Rowes Bay, Garbutt, Aitkenvale, Cranbrook, Currajong, Mysterton, Pimlico, Mundingburra, Douglas, Annandale, Kirwan and Thuringowa Central and South Townsville areas.
The dam spillway gates may open to their full setting between the hours of 8.30pm tonight and 6am tomorrow. This setting would release up to 2000 cubic metres of water per second out of the dam.
Everyone should ensure they move away from riverbanks and get to higher ground before 8.30pm tonight.
Residents still in their homes in these suburbs should move to the highest ground in their dwelling before 8.30pm tonight.
A map of potential inundated properties will released shortly.

Shooting incident, Margate

A man and a woman assisting police with their enquiries following a shooting that occurred earlier today.
Officers were called to an address on McCulloch Avenue at around 11.40am following reports a man had sustained a suspected gunshot wound.
He has been transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.
A man and a woman were taken into custody a short time later by police.
Investigations are continuing.

Important evacuation route information

Police are asking vehicles attempting to leave flooded areas via Rooneys Bridge/Abbots Street in Railway Estate to turn around and use Lakeside Drive to get to higher ground.
Travel to the city is NOT accessible via this route.
There is significant traffic congestion in the area as a result.

An Emergency Alert has been issued for Oonoonba, Idalia and Cluden.
Residents are being advised that the heavy intense rainfall on top of elevated flood levels is likely to cause flash flooding.
Residents should move to higher ground immediately if they are concerned. Evacuation centres are open at Heatley Secondary College on Fulham Road, and Ignatius Park College on Ross River Road.

The message advises residents flood water from the Flinders River is expected to cause flooding on the north side of the river.
Properties in this area are likely to be impacted. Residents should warn neighbours, secure belongings and move to higher ground if required.

As students head back to school, police urge motorists to slow down and obey reduced speed limits

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating of the Road Policing Command has reminded motorists the 2019 school year has begun and they should look to take extra care in school zones.
Assistant Commissioner Keating said that from today all school zones in Queensland were operational, meaning reduced speed limits would be enforced.
“The first day of school is meant to be an exciting one, particularly for many students who are attending school for the first time,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
“We are urging motorists to slow down and abide by the reduced speed limits while approaching and driving through marked school zones.
“Be aware of the changing speed limits. The standard operating times for most school zones in Queensland is between 7am and 9am and between 2pm and 4pm.
“Across the state, Queensland motorists can expect to see police enforcing important road rules such as speeding, stopping at children’s crossings and wearing seatbelts.
