Queensland Police Women look back on an era

A gathering of over 200 PWs
On October 30, more than 200 of the original Queensland PWs (Police Women) came together to remember the era when women were first given police powers in the state.
Female officers in the Queensland Police Force (as the QPS was then known) were given their number with a PW designation, differentiating them from their male counterparts.
From 1965-1975, 374 women were sworn in as PWs, starting with PW1 Elizabeth Boyle and ending with PW379 Lynette Bray.
The PW numbers differ from the total because a number of women left the force to marry, but then re-joined later with a new PW designation.
After the PW era, female officers were amalgamated into the standard sequencing and given numbers the same as male officers, which continues today.

The reunion event at Victoria Park was organised by a group of former PWs who wanted to bring the women together to honour this significant

Arson investigation, Kallangur

Detectives investigating a suspicious fire at a Kallangur business that caused extensive damage in the early hours of Sunday morning are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
Around 3.40am, officers attended a pet store on Russell Street after a report of a fire.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the premises was accessed and the fire was intentionally lit.
As part of their inquiries detectives are appealing for anyone who was driving in the vicinity of Russell Street and Dohles Rock Road between midnight and 3.40am that has any dashcam footage to contact them.
Investigations continue.

QPS initiatives recognised at Premier’s Awards for Excellence

Minister for Police, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP and Commissioner Ian Stewart have congratulated the Queensland Police Service (QPS) projects nominated as finalists at the Premier’s Awards for Excellence including two projects that won in their categories and one that was Highly Commended for the overall Premier’s Award.
The Premier’s Awards for Excellence acknowledges the exemplary work by individuals and teams across the Queensland public sector, and recognises the outstanding initiatives being developed and delivered for the benefit of all Queenslanders.

Day five of Gold Coast Schoolies 2018

Police were again pleased with the crowd behaviour at the Surfers Paradise Schoolies celebrations overnight with large numbers of schoolies in and about the Surfers Paradise CBD.
There were 5 schoolies arrested on 8 offences overnight, mainly for public nuisance offences. Of those schoolies arrested, 4 were male and 1 was female.
In comparison, for the same night in 2017 there were 11 schoolies arrested.
One schoolie was also issued with a liquor infringement notice.
There were ten non-schoolies arrested on 26 charges, relating to drug offences, public nuisance, resisting eviction and other offences.
Police continue to remind school leavers to act responsibly.

Suspicious fire, East Ipswich

Police are investigating after a suspicious fire at house in East Ipswich overnight.
Emergency services were called to the address on Tarcoola Street just before 10pm following reports of a fire.
Preliminary investigations indicate the house was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.
Police have established a crime scene and investigators will return to the scene later today.
Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around Tarcoola Street shortly before 10pm is urged to contact police.

Update: Sexual assault investigation, Rasmussen

Townsville detectives have charged a man following investigations into the sexual assault of a woman at a restaurant in Rasmussen on Sunday, November 18.
Officers were called to the Riverway Drive business around 4.45pm after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in the bathroom by an unknown man.
She was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Following a public appeal officers arrested a man at an address in North Ward at around 2:00pm today.
A 22-year-old Kelso man has been charged with 10 offences including five counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count each of deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault.
He is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on November 21.

Update: Death investigation, Surfers Paradise

The investigation into the death of a nine-month-old girl, who was located on a Surfers Paradise Beach on Monday November 19, is now being handled by New South Wales Police Force as it has been established the death occurred in NSW.
Queensland Police will continue to assist New South Wales authorities with the investigation.
New South Wales Detectives have formally advised the Queensland Police Service they will seek the extradition of a 48-year-old man.

Update – Serious traffic crash, Chambers Flat

A 26-year-old man who was seriously injured during a two-vehicle crash on November 11 has died in hospital.
Police are investigating following a serious traffic crash that occurred in Chambers Flat this afternoon.
Just after 4pm, a motorcycle travelling on Chambers Flat Road collided with the rear of a truck.
No one else was injured as a result of the crash.
The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Suspicious death, Logan

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 4-month old girl from the Logan District, after she was taken to the Logan Hospital yesterday morning suffering life-threatening injuries.
The infant was transported to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition, where she passed away this afternoon.
Detectives from the Logan Child Protection and Investigation Unit and State Crime Command’s Homicide and Child Trauma squads are investigating.
A 35-year-old woman and 37-year-old man are assisting police with their enquiries.
There is no further information available at this time.

Drug operation closure, The Gemfields

Detectives from Emerald Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have charged a total of six people with 80 offences following the closure of a six-month drug operation.
Officers launched Operation Quebec Shephard in The Gemfields area which targeted the supply of ice and fentanyl and culminated in police raiding eleven properties today.
Emerald detectives were assisted in the operation by the Woorabinda CPIU, Blackwater CIB, Emerald station, Ankie Station, Capella Station, Springsure Station Major Organised Crime Squad (rural), Rockhampton Dog Squad and the Capricornia Tactical Crime Squad.
So far, six people have been charged with a range of drug offences, some of which include producing, supplying and possessing dangerous drugs, and the possession of tainted property.
A46-year-old Gemfield man was arrested today and charged with drug trafficking (ice). He has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Emerald Magistrates Court tomorrow.
A 33-year-old Gemfield woman located at the same address was also arrested.
