Brunch Specialist Sarmic Cafe Moves from Bulimba to Morningside

A former cafe in Bulimba is moving some three kilometres away to Morningside. Sarmic, known for its artisanal jams, relish and sauces, will soon be operating at its new location at 639 Wynnum Road after ceasing trading at its Apollo Road site in August.

As of press time, Sarmic is rebuilding the former Southside Tear Room digs in Morningside. Its owners have not yet announced the official opening date but the construction of the cafe has been going on schedule.

In July, the owners announced that Sarmic will be moving out of its Bulimba location to “a bigger better premises” that wasn’t far away. Along with the change in location, the cafe is expected to offer new things for its patrons.

Sarmic, which is a combination of the names of owners Sarah Coorey and Michael Hoare, opened its doors in 2016. Since then, it has become a notable presence in the suburb’s brunch scene.

Offering a small but unforgettable selection of meals for brunch, Sarmic’s scrambled eggs, herbed smashed avocado on cornbread, honey-baked nectarines with ricotta cheese, and potato hash with carrot jam are just some of the favourites.

Based on its current construction work, the cafe appears to retain its industrial chic interiors. The owners confirmed that Sarmic will be a dog-friendly place.

Frequent diners have been anticipating Sarmic’s return inasmuch as they’ve been missing the cafe’s old digs.

“Except for all the memories that place held, [Sarmic] always build a community and the next ones coming as well,” one customer said.

Find Your New BFF aka Best Furry Friend at Morningside Adoption Event

Do you know that 400,000 animals are abandoned in Australia every year? Sent to crowded shelters, these animals are at risk of being put down but you’ll have a chance to rescue and make a difference for one or more animal at the upcoming Save A Life National Adoption day.

On Saturday, the 17th of Aug 2019, Just for Pets along with Animal Welfare League QLD will mount the Save A Life pet adoption day in Morningside. If you’re interested in pet adoption, drop by Pets Unleashed at 5/630 Wynnum Road during trading hours to meet and bring home your potential furever companion.

Cats and dogs up for rehoming on pet adoption day have been given medical attention from veterinarians and shelter caretakers while in temporary custody. They’ve been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, as well as microchipped. However, they still need a good home where a human can shower them with tender loving care.

Found In Morningside: The Place To Watch The Rugby World Cup In September

The Rugby World Cup comes around every 4 years and Dandelion Social will be likely packed to the rafters for all the major matches.

Dandelion social logo

Sarah, the owner of Dandelion Social, is a rugby nut. Her brother has just represented Ireland in the U20 World Championship in Argentina, and let’s just say she’s likely to be wearing green come September.

Dandelion Social opened recently on Wynnum Road in Morningside and has had rave reviews ever since. Wholesome meals are designed to fill you up, complemented by everything from Guinness to 150 Lashes to great coffee and teas.

Hearty breakfasts on the menu include the likes of the Full Irish (bacon, eggs, sausages, white and black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, beans, potato cake and traditional soda bread served with tea or coffee). You can also get a taste of their delicious lunches such as the Beef Baguette (slow braised beef served with sautéed mushrooms and onion in a creamy peppercorn sauce served in a freshly baked baguette).

Dinner options like The Dandelion Social Ploughmans Platter, Marinated Pork, Slow Braised Beef Ragout and Crusted Barramundi Pistachio as well as an interesting vegetarian option: Middle Eastern Spiced Pumpkin with wild rice, Quinoa, Feta, Pomegranate and baby herbs are sure to satisfy the palate.

Sarah’s fantastic eatery also welcomes dogs in the outdoor area and is very wheelchair accessible from the rear entrance.

So look no further for the place to watch the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo when it kicks off on September 20. Japan being an hour behind Brisvegas means that kick off times will be 2:45 p.m / 5:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. our time, ideal for sinking a few pints and soaking up the atmosphere.

Expect Green and Gold and the Irish Greens to not be the only representation. There are plenty of English, Scots, South Africans as well as the no doubt all-dominant All Black fans. It is going to be a massive event and Michael Cheika generally gets the Wallabies up for the big one.

In the meantime, if you fancy a good hearty meal with portions that will leave you full or a decent pint of Guinness, head over to Dandelion Social.

Morningside Picture Framing Holds First Exhibit Featuring Brenden McDonough

Morningside Picture Framing has moved to an expanded location and to inaugurate its new art gallery, the quality custom framing business will feature the creation of local artist Brenden James McDonough as its first exhibit.

Mr McDonough’s exhibit, titled “Take a Walk in My Shoes,” will open on Friday, the 24th of May 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Morningside Picture Framing Gallery at 11/611 Wynnum Road.

Five of his artworks will be auctioned off during the opening, where part of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

These art pieces carry a footwear theme that highlights important stages of the artist’s life:

  • Being a little kid. Wanting to grow up to be like my Dad
  • Going to university and travelling the world
  • Playing footy and the pain involved
  • Teaching
  • Goal to become a full-time artist

As announced on his Facebook page, Mr McDonough has initiated a blind bidding process. Ahead of the actual exhibit, interested parties may view these five pieces at Morningside Picture Framing for the bidding.

The artist, who grew up in South Lismore in NSW, is currently a high school teacher in Beenleigh, Queensland. He decided to take up drawing seriously in 2017 and was mostly self-taught to develop his creative skill. He also picked pens as his medium for drawing, which required enormous patience.

“A lot of my friends commented to me during the initial stages on how much patience I must have when it comes to drawing. They often asked how I could be bothered. Whilst my wife and kids may disagree, I have always thought I was a fairly patient person.

“I also usually tell them the following story- When I first moved out of home, I lived in a unit by myself with no television, no computer, not even a radio. So one night, I filled a saucepan up with water, put it on the stove and watched it boil until all the water evaporated just to see how long it would take (I’ll give you a hot tip, it takes… ages).

“Morale (sic) of the story, I can waste hours of time doing dumb shit like this, so putting in the time toward something that is actually fulfilling and rewarding was child’s play.”

Morningside Picture Framing Gallery will be holding exhibitions of other local artists after Mr McDonough. The goal is to create an artists’ haven to showcase their work in Morningside.

Morningside Residents Speak Out Against Developments that Fail to Meet BCC Future Blueprint

Morningside locals have expressed scepticism over Brisbane City Council’s Future Blueprint plan, which was intended to protect the suburb against future developments that do not adhere to the area’s character.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has identified Morningside as one of the suburbs where townhouses and units would be banned under the plan.

Residents remain doubtful about the plan to preserve Morningside from inappropriate development due to recent townhouse development proposals and the overdevelopment happening in several parts of the city.

The BCC Future Blueprint gathered the opinions of over 100,000 residents and every suburb in the city has participated. Its principles include:

  • Create a city of neighbourhoods
  • Protect and create greenspace
  • Create more to see and do
  • Protect the Brisbane backyard and their unique character
  • Ensure best practice design that complements the character of Brisbane
  • Empower and engage residents
  • Get people home quicker and safer with more travel options
  • Give people more choice when it comes to housing

Brisbane’s Future Blueprint is supposed to restrict the establishment of such townhouses in areas for single homes.

The restriction of townhouses and apartments to be built in areas for single homes fall under the principle “Protect the Brisbane backyard and their unique character.”

The plan also clearly states that the council is determined to stop the establishment of townhouses or apartments in low-density areas that are meant for single homes. The council aims to preserve the space between homes by implementing minimum setbacks on property boundaries and by ensuring that all suburban developments are in line with the vision for the suburb.

Councillor Kara Cook was quick to point out two townhouse development proposals in the suburb that do not meet their City Plan requirements.

City Planning Chairman Matthew Bourke addressed the issue and said that the two development proposals in the suburb were submitted to be built on low to medium density-zoned areas.
