Police officer stood down Northern Region

A 29-year-old male constable from the Northern Region who was suspended from the Queensland Police Service has now been stood down from duty.
The officer is subject of an investigation in relation to use of excessive force on a suspect in custody. A charge of common assault preferred against the officer has now been finalised in the Cairns Magistrates Court resulting in a finding of not guilty. A disciplinary investigation is now being conducted in relation to the allegations to determine what, if any, further action is required.
In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when an officer faces serious allegations of misconduct. This does not mean that the allegations against the officer have been substantiated.

PSPA revoked, Peregian Springs

Police have revoked the PSPA that was declared at Peregian Springs and Peregian Beach in relation to a bushfire in the area on Monday night.
All residents are permitted to return to their homes, however should remain vigilant.
A significant police presence will remain in the area to support the return of residents following the fires.

Update – Serious assault investigation, Torquay

The original wording has been edited to remove identifying information.
Maryborough detectives investigating the serious assault of a 45-year-old Torquay man last week have a man in custody who they previously released the name and image earlier today.
The incident occurred at Urangan Street Torquay on Wednesday, September 4 just after 2pm.
The 45-year-old victim in this instance remains in a critical condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Detectives are continuing their investigations.
Anyone who may have CCTV footage or may have seen the incident are asked to contact police.

CORRECTION: Fatal house fire, Oakey

**Correction – an earlier version said the man was 62, however he is 57 as per the update below**
Police are investigating a fatal house fire which occurred in Oakey overnight.
Emergency Services were called to a King Street home around 2.45am today to find the house destroyed by fire.
Sadly, a deceased person was located inside the home with forensic tests to be undertaken to identify the person.
The home owner and sole resident of the address, a 57-year-old man is unaccounted for with police preliminary inquiries indicating he was believed to have been home last night.
A crime scene has been established as officers work to determine the cause of the fire with preliminary investigations suggesting the fire is non-suspicious.
The fire is not related to the current bushfires across Queensland.

Peregian Beach, Marcus Beach, Castaways Beach and Peregian Springs residents safe to return

Police have advised that residents of Peregian Beach, Marcus Beach and Castaways Beach – areas east of the National Park – can now safely return to their homes.
All other evacuated areas are not yet safe to return to. Residents of other suburbs should await further advice and continue to follow the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service social media channels for further details.
Queensland Police has advised an emergency situation is still in place in the Public Safety Preservation Act declared area around Weyba, Weyba Downs and Peregian Breeze.
Residents of these areas should not attempt to return to their homes at this stage.
David Low Way and the Sunshine Motorway are open to motorists and residents are urged to drive to the conditions and be patient as they make their way home.

Wounding, Mackay

Police are investigating a wounding incident in Mackay yesterday (September 10).
At 5.45pm officers were called to the grounds of a James Street unit complex following reports of a disturbance.
Preliminary information suggests an altercation occurred between two men, aged 22 and 25, during which time one of the men threw a knife at the other man but missed him. The 25-year-old Mackay man sustained minor wounds to his hands trying to protect himself.
A 20-year-old man then came to the assistance of the 25-year-old man and sustained a stab wound to his back.
During the altercations, the 22-year-old man also sustained a deep wound to his thigh with police investigating how he sustained this injury.
The 22-year-old man from Mackay and the 20-year-old man from Beaconsfield were transported to the Mackay Hospital for treatment and both are in a stable condition.
The trio are known to each other.

Update: Homicide investigation, Maroochydore

Detectives investigating the murder of 53-year-old David Collin have launched a public appeal to determine the circumstances prior to the discovery of his body in Maroochydore on September 9.
Preliminary information suggests the homeless man was subject to a violent, unprovoked attack as he slept in his sleeping bag at the rear of a community centre on Millwell Road East.
Mr Collin was located with severe head injuries by a member of the public who immediately notified police around 8.30am.
Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards from the Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch said the victim was seen using a carry bag with wheels to transport his possessions so he may have stood out to people passing by.
“Between 6:00pm on Sunday evening to daylight on Monday morning, six people can be seen walking in the vicinity of where Mr Collin slept that night,” Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards said.

Fatal traffic crash, Nundubbermere

Police are investigating a fatal, single vehicle traffic crash which occurred near Stanthorpe yesterday.
Just before midday, a 63-year-old Victorian man was riding a motorcycle along Murphy’s Crossing Road at Nundubbermere as part of a larger group, when he has lost control and crashed.
An off-duty nurse located the crash and provided first aid along with the other riders, however the man was declared deceased at the scene.
The Forensic Crash Unit will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Wounding, South Brisbane

Police are investigating an incident in South Brisbane last night which resulted in a 17-year-old boy receiving life-threatening injuries.
At 8.30pm, officers were called to Clarence Street following reports the boy had received wounds consistent with being stabbed.
He was transported to the Princess Alexandra hospital for treatment to serious injuries.
Investigations are continuing by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Branch.

Update 4: Death investigation, Kalinga Park

Police have charged a man with murder following the death of 26-year-old Ioli Hadjilyra in Clayfield on September 4.
Around 12pm today police arrested a 34-year-old man at the corner of Felix Street and Lutwyche Road, Lutwyche, after members of the public alerted police.
The man has since been charged with murder and is due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow (September 11).
Ms Hadjilyra’s body was found in Kalinga Park on September 4.
Police would like to thank the community for their ongoing support with this investigation.
