Fly Kites this Weekend at the Brisbane Kite Festival in Cannon Hill

Flying a kite is a typical childhood pastime in Australia, yet when people grow older, we tend to forget how much fun it can be. Bring back the old times and join the Brisbane Kite Festival in Cannon Hill this weekend.

The event will be staged at the Murarrie Recreation Ground on Wynnum Road on Sunday, 28 April 2019 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

You are free to bring your own kite or purchase one from the festival. There is a designated area where you can fly your kites alongside professional kite flyers.

There are a lot of activities to do aside from making and flying kites. Your family, especially the kids would surely have loads of fun face painting, jumping castles, and feasting on sausage sizzle.

Everyone is welcome to join this free event sponsored by the Brisbane City Council and organised by the Rotary Clubs of Balmoral, Carindale and the Port of Brisbane. There will also be special assistance from the Phoenix Kite Collective.

Pets are allowed but they must be supervised and on leash at all times. Free car parking on site is available and the closest train station is Murarrie on the Cleveland Line.

Whilst it’s a free entry event, the festival accepts gold coin donations, which will all be used for local and international community projects of the Rotary Clubs of Port of Brisbane, Carindale, and Balmoral.

For further information about the event, check out the Brisbane Kite Festival website and Facebook page.

Locals Oppose Development Lodged for Beelarong Street in Morningside

Residents are against the proposed residential lots, new roads and drainage reserve plans for 54 and 133 Beelarong Street in Morningside.

An online petition led by a concerned Morningside resident has requested the Council to acquire the rural zoned land to protect it from residential development.

Locals who signed the petition agree that a residential development will never be appropriate on a land that comes under many City Plan 2014 overlays, which includes a wetland, an erosion-prone area, and a citywide waterway corridor.

Following concerns from the locals, the Brisbane City Council has already expressed their opinion regarding the matter. It now appears that even the Council does not support the proposal.

According to City Planning Chairman Matthew Bourke, Council has already raised several concerns with the applicant during pre-lodgement meetings and continued to raise concerns about flood-free access and environmental impacts during the ongoing assessment process.

BCC will not finalise the assessment of the proposed residential development unless it gets a response from the State Government to do so.

Cr Bourke said the State Government is required to review the development application as the proposal could potentially impact marine plants in the area.

The development application will require truck loads of fill to raise the land above most floods. This will likely result in an increased flood risk to all other properties within the Perrin Creek catchment.

It will also lead to loss of green space and destruction of protected vegetation and wildlife corridors, not to mention that it can cause unacceptable risk to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on Beelarong Street.

Proposed Development

Based on the development application lodged in August 2018, the applicant is planning to build 23 house blocks and a new road in Beelarong Street in two stages.

The first stage will be for building nine lots, one balance lot and a new road. The final stage will be dedicated for constructing the 14 lots, a drainage reserve and another road.

Developers are seeking to link the subdivision to Beelarong Street through a local road network.

Cardno, the designer of the proposed subdivision believes the size and dimensions of the created lots are in keeping with the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

The designers are also convinced that the size and dimensions are appropriate for the siting and construction of dwelling houses on the lots in a manner that maximises private space, privacy, amenity and the economic use of land in a well-serviced locality.

The developer is convinced all rain events would not be worsened and assured that they are going to upgrade Beelarong St to ensure flood free access.

For further information about the proposed house blocks at Beelarong Street, see the Full DA – A005003693.

Experience Authentic Japanese Dining at Nobunaga Yakitori Morningside

Are you craving for Yakitori but wondering where to find a restaurant across Brisbane? Explore the Morningside neighborhood and indulge with servings of authentic Japanese skewered meat at Nobunaga Yakitori.

Yakitori literally means “grilled chicken” but this Morningside diner offers more than just chicken. They have other meats such as seafood, beef and pork and even vegetables like tamanegi or sliced onion, niniku or garlic cloves, and kinoko or mushroom.

Grilled meat is best served with Japanese curry rice and nobunaga potato sarada or their own delicious potato salad with Japanese mayo on the side. For seafood lovers, they have the sea scallop from Hokkaido and the O Ebi or large prawns perfect for groups.

If you have sweet tooth, don’t miss their Japanese cheese cake imported from Fukuoka, Japan. They also have the matcha and vanilla-flavored ice creams to satisfy any sweet cravings. They have Calpis, an original Japanese soft drink to pair with grilled meat. But if you wish to add a healthier twist to your meal, you may choose their Japanese green tea or lemon tea.

More than the food, the ambience at Nobunaga Yakitori gives an authentic Japanese vibe. They have chairs complementing their wooden tables and just like the traditional way, you may opt for the seiza style of sitting on your knees.

Yakitori became popular in Japan in the mid 1900s but only became a trend in other countries like United States and Australia a few years ago. It was 2017 when Yakitori became a trend in Brisbane that there is a noticeable increase in yakitori pop-ups everywhere.

What makes yakitori special? For fans of Japanese-style grilled meat, it’s the complex flavours of the spices or sauces that give the bite-size meat an extra oomph. It is slow-cooked over a specially designed charcoal grill. The end product, a perfectly browned crust that is juicy on the inside, will whet your appetite.

Nobunaga Yakitori is located at 645 Wynnum Road, Morningside. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday from noon until 9:00 pm.

Take Part in Gibson Island Business Clean-Up Day this February

Would you like to be a part of the plant life restoration at Gibson Island? The Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Group (B4C) is mounting a Business Clean-Up Day at the Paringa Road site on Tuesday, the 26th of February, at 9:00 a.m.

The date coincides with the annual Clean Up Australia Day, which enjoins people to take action in saving the environment.

Participants to the said event on Gibson Island will be clearing out weeds and planting more trees in an effort to increase the vegetation to benefit species that live and thrive near the Brisbane River and Aquarium Passage in Murarrie.

Meanwhile, restoration efforts at Gibson Island will continue for the next 18 months as the initiative recently received $30,000 in sponsored funds.

The Pratt Foundation committed $20,000 to the project, whilst Queensland Bulk Handling (QBH) will shoulder $10,000 to rehabilitate the mangrove, the home to a colony of grey-headed flying foxes and other subpopulations of fish.

The grey-headed flying foxes are bats native to Australia. In 2008, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species identified these mammals as “vulnerable to extinction.”

The B4C and the Department of Natural Resources spearheaded the cleanup and rehabilitation of Gibson Island in 2018 by clearing out the weeds and planting 3,000 trees. The vegetation should provide shade and protection around the waters of the Aquarium Passage. It will also serve as the breeding ground of small birds like the blue fairy wrens.

On the 25th of January, 56 people returned to this site in Murarrie to plant more trees, which now totals to 3,346. QBH also took this time to hand out the cheque to fund future rehabilitation efforts in the next 12 to 18 months.

Additionally, B4C will be replanting trees and rebuilding the soil around QBH’s 11-hectre land in the Port of Brisbane to also increase the vegetation in the area.

QPS and Morningside Police Station Launched South Brisbane District Operation Wake Up

QPS and Morning Police Station launched South Brisbane District Operation Wake Up last December 2018 through a drink driving educational event to enhance road safety and reduce road toll.

Acting Chief Superintendent Virginia Nelson launched the QPS program through the QPC Drink Rite event and was attended by Local Queensland MP the Honourable Di Farmer and key stakeholders.

Drink Rite is a Queensland Police Service initiative aimed at helping educate people about alcohol consumption and drink driving, and promote the message to the public — “If you are going to drink alcohol – do not drive.” The program involves an activity that will have participants consuming alcohol and breath tested by a police officer, and discussing the results and educating the participants and audience members about alcohol content, standard drinks, and drink driving.

“By conducting road safety enforcement operations and engaging in education activities we are ensuring the safety of members of the public that drive on the South Brisbane roads,” Acting Chief Superintendent Virginia Nelson said.

Road safety stakeholders who participated in the event were representatives from the office of Federal MP, the Honourable Terri Butler, local school principals and deputies, Queensland Ambulance Service, Port of Brisbane management, sporting club management representatives, and NHW representatives.

The result of breath tests surprised a number of participants who turned out to have exceeded the 0.05 alcohol limit after just a drink or two. The results proved the fact that a person’s breath alcohol concentration is affected by one’s body size, food intake, fitness level, mood, and hormones.

After the activities and reading the results, participants agreed that regardless of the amount of drink they consumed, they should always have a designated driver, or make arrangements to get home.

“All participants walked away with a better understanding of the effects of alcohol and the many different factors that can also affect your breath alcohol concentration,” Officer in Charge Morningside Police — Senior Sergeant Jackson said.
