Kerbside Collection Coming to Morningside, Murrarrie & Cannon Hill

Heads up, Morningside, Murrarrie and Cannon Hill residents! Kerbside collection will be back on Monday, 14 Feb 2022. Make sure that you have your items sorted out and ready for collection before 6:00 a.m.

Council has resumed the kerbside collection service since mid-2021 and Morningside, Murrarrie and Cannon Hill will finally get their turn after more than a year of pause due to the pandemic.

As with the previous collections, Council has a list of acceptable and unacceptable items for kerbside collection. Residents are encouraged NOT to include the following on their pile:

  • bricks and concrete
  • commercial builders waste
  • car parts and tyres, including car batteries
  • dirt and stones
  • garden waste (e.g. trees, grass, potted plants)
  • gas bottles
  • general household waste (e.g. food scraps)
  • glass and mirrors
  • hazardous wastes (e.g. chemicals, oil, asbestos)
  • household waste that normally goes into your waste or recycling bin
  • liquids

Items that are deemed unacceptable will not be picked up by the collectors. Kerbside piles with sharp objects and dangerous items, or are too heavy to be lifted by two people might not be collected as well.

In preparing the items for collection, remember to keep the piles organised by the kerb, freeing the footpaths and roadways. Items should also be secured, especially if severe weather is expected.

Doors from cabinets or refrigerators should be removed to ensure that no animals or curious small children will be trapped inside. There are serious threats of children suffocating in refrigerators that still have doors attached.

Illegal dumping fines may apply if unacceptable material is not removed within seven days of the notified collection period.  As of July 2021, a penalty unit is equal to $137.80.

For items that were not collected, residents have the option to bring these to resource recovery centres or donate to reuse and recycle facilities or organisations like GIVIT and Charitable Recycling Australia.

The applicant, Love Sunshine Pty Ltd, has been granted approval for their revised proposal (A005625101) which was submitted in April 2021. Located at 1882 Creek Rd, the project will also provide 122 car parking spaces on two basement levels.

As with the original proposal, there are four existing dwellings on the subject site which will be demolished to facilitate the development.

The initial plan included an indoor sport and recreation area on Level 1. However, it has been abolished and replaced with a 939-sqm medical centre under the new proposal.

Changes to the previously approved application will also feature an additional storey and an increase in gross floor area, which according to Town Planning Alliance’s assessment report, was contained within the approved setbacks and site cover.

Based on the planning documents, the changes will not increase the visual bulk of the approved development and the additional storey is accommodated within the approved building height, with only small changes to the rooftop layout. It will repurpose the rooftop for use as an outdoor play area for the proposed childcare centre.

The applicant has also received an approval to increase their parking provision to accommodate for the increase in floor space.

“These changes will provide for no additional impacts on adjoining residential amenities. The proposal is identified as being consistent with the Planning Scheme’s intent for the District Centre Zone and neighbourhood plan,” Town Planning Alliance noted.

Michael Hill Jewellers to Move Headquarters to Cannon Hill

Specialty retailer Michael Hill Jewellers is planning to move its headquarters to a new purpose-built site in Cannon Hill, which will house its main offices, production and manufacturing departments, and distribution facility.

The company has signed a 10-year lease for a 3,520 square metre space acquired by the Ironside Group in August 2021. The jewellery company’s staff of 250 are currently at a smaller headquarters in Murrarrie, which has been the home of Michael Hill Jewellers for nearly two decades.

According to Daniel Bracken, the jeweller’s chief executive, the new site is anticipated to entice more talents to join their creative, marketing, and merchandising departments. The move also presents an opportunity for the company to work with a sought-after architectural firm and developer that will incorporate Michael Hill’s desire for a collaborative working environment.

Ironside Group bought the property from Anthony Johns Group for $36 million. In 2013, Anthony Johns Group developed the commercial spaces next door on 38 Southgate Avenue, Cannon Hill.

The development application has not yet been lodged with Brisbane City Council but construction has been projected to finish by mid-2022 with the staff moving into the premises later that year.

Michael Hill Jewellers is an international brand with over 300 stores across the globe. Founded by Mr Hill and his wife, Christine, the company started in New Zealand in 1979 and opened 10 stores in Australia by the 1980s. With most of their sales coming from Australia, The Hills made Brisbane their headquarters.

Cannon Hill Apartment Project Hiring More Women Tradies

A 20-unit apartment construction project in Cannon Hill is aiming to close the gender gap by increasing the number of its women tradies by 20 percent. Priority is given to hiring women roofers who will join the current 16 female workers on the site.

The Exemplar apartments, funded by the Department of Housing and Public Works and awarded to a tender in July, needs at least 64 women tradies until the project’s target completion in June 2021.

A registration with QBuild is necessary to qualify for work at a construction site backed by the government.

Casey Bell said that the vibe at the Cannon Hill site is “very different and exciting” and she is learning more about the electrical trade amidst the challenges of her job. She believes she made the best decision to chart a career path in a male-dominated industry and hopes that more women will consider construction.

According to the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) Queensland president Jennifer Gillett, this pandemic has highlighted the value of an untapped resource among female tradies. There is a solid career waiting for many women who are needed in various roles in construction.

NAWIC said that women make up only two percent of the construction workforce in Queensland and the hope is to improve this number to 11 percent.

But the opportunity for women to join construction was hatched before the pandemic. In October 2019, the government announced a plan to provide thousands of jobs for women in at least 20 social housing construction projects across the state.

The Cannon Hill site is the pilot project.

“We know that a diverse workforce allows the best talent to rise to the top, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, cultural background or beliefs,” Minister for Women and Member for Bulimba Di Farmer said. “Around 15 percent of apprentices in QBuild are female and one in four of the 16,000 young people who applied for a place in the Manufacturing Industry Group Apprenticeship Scheme last financial year were female.

“To retain this emerging talent in the workforce, we’ve got to make working environments more accessible, to do better than 2.4 percent female participation in our state’s construction industry.”

New $1-M QFES Appliance in Cannon Hill Improves Fire and Chemical Emergency Response Across the State

Brisbane’s Queensland Fire and Rescue Special Operations Centre in Cannon Hill received a new $1-million QFES appliance. The new vehicle is part of the $702 million QFES budget for this financial year.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the million-dollar Scientific Two appliance can respond to fires and chemical emergencies around the state more efficiently.

“Boasting flexible storage and specialist equipment, the new appliance features detectors that can find and identify liquids, solids and gases; as well as specialist mitigation equipment,” Mr Crawford said.

“It is one of 61 Fire and Rescue appliances to be delivered this financial year under our record $702 million QFES Budget, which will also supply 119 appliances to the Rural Fire Service,” he added.

Moreover, the government targets to deliver 180 new urban and rural fire appliances in 2018-2019. The new vehicles will further help boost firefighting efforts across Queensland.

QFES Research and Scientific Branch

The Fire and Rescue Special Operations Centre Research and Scientific Branch in Cannon Hill has already provided guidance and expertise at more than 200 incidents across Queensland and New Zealand in the past six months.

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the RSB had seven permanent scientifically qualified staff. They have supported 53 volunteers across Queensland.

“The staff and volunteers have technical experience and operational expertise to provide support and advice to emergency responders for the effective management of unidentified hazardous materials, contamination incidents, fires and toxic emissions,” Ms Carroll said.

“Making sure QFES personnel have the best equipment for the job will help them respond to hazmat emergencies more efficiently.”

Although the QFES is now using a cutting-edge equipment, prevention will always be more effective in firefighting.
